Travel Trends: New minister tours Jerusalem
A 4.5 percent drop in the number of foreign visitors to Israel last year didn't prevent a similar increase in the number of visits to the country's most popular paid-entry tourist attractions. According to numbers released Wednesday by business information provider Dun & Bradstreet Israel, visits to the country's 20 most popular, paid-entry tourist sites rose 5% in 2006, with Jerusalem's Biblical Zoo leading the pack, just ahead of another animal-oriented attraction, the Ramat Gan Safari. The Biblical Zoo saw a 24% rise in visits in 2006, with 682,944 patrons paying for admission; the Ramat Gan Safari enjoyed a 19% visitor increase to 572,710. The two sites together accounted from roughly 1.25 million of the seven million total visits paid to Israel's top 20 tourist sites last year, with the hot springs of the Hamat Gader Recreation Park ranking third for the year with some 550,000 visitors.
Jury out on pet food poisoning
A number of cases of dogs suffering renal failure have been reported in KwaZulu-Natal this week - since the latest scare about contaminated pet food - but veterinary surgeons say poisoning cannot be presumed without scientific evidence. They say renal failure can have many causes, including infections such as biliary, and at the moment there is no evidence from food tests or post mortems to confirm there has been contamination. But they warn pet owners to consult a veterinary surgeon if their dogs or cats show any signs of illness that may have resulted from eating contaminated food. The latest fears arose after the makers of Vets Choice foods, Royal Canin South Africa, decided to suspend sales of their products after reports of 19 confirmed cases of dogs with acute renal failure in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
G. Chambers Williams III: Four-wheeling safari
The small Colorado River town, surrounded by majestic red rock formations, abandoned uranium mines, spectacular canyons and two national parks, attracts visitors year-round, most of whom come with their own four-wheel-drive vehicles suitable for negotiating the scores of off-road trails. And for those who like to do their four-wheeling in large groups, the annual Easter Jeep Safari is just the thing. Held during a nine-day period each year leading up to Easter, the safari attracts thousands of off-road-driving aficionados. During the event, especially the last four days — Thursday through Sunday — the trails are crowded, the motels are full and the nearby campgrounds are swamped with tents, trailers and motor homes. Some people like the big crowds and the camaraderie of four-wheel-drive folks that the Easter event brings.
